Sourcing
The southern regions of Brazil have ideal climatic conditions for growing citrus fruits. This area thus produces splendid citrus fruits, from which the highest quality citrus essential oils are extracted.
In Brazil, mandarin trees are cultivated for the production of ripe, red fruit intended for the fresh market. However, Green Mandarin essential oil is made from unripe fruit, which is harvested early in the ripening process or removed as part of fruit thinning. Fruit tree thinning is necessary to give the remaining fruits on the tree enough space to develop and ripen. The fruits plucked during thinning are still too green and sour to be suitable for consumption, and are therefore usually discarded. doTERRA collects and uses these unripe fruits to produce its Green Mandarin essential oil, preventing them from going to waste. The essential oil is obtained by cold-pressing the fruit peel, and its distinctive aroma is unlike that of the ripe, or red, fruit.
