Sourcing
Lemongrass does not require much soil water, so it grows with good yields in many regions of India. Furthermore, by sourcing lemongrass essential oil from India, we can support small-scale farmers there.
Lemongrass is a perennial grass that is typically harvested four times a year. During harvest, it is cut at the base, left to dry in the field, and then collected the following day. The piled lemongrass is then bound into bundles, loaded onto carts, and transported to the distillery. Crop yield also depends on how many times the plant is cut back during the year, but on average, 110 kilograms per hectare can be expected. The lemongrass that has already undergone essential oil distillation can later be used as an energy source to power the distillery. doTERRA sources lemongrass from small-scale farmers in India. A farmer typically cultivates slightly more than one hectare of land. Although some farmers also grow other cash crops such as wheat, potatoes, and rice, the diversification provided by lemongrass brings them greater profit. This is because lemongrass is a valuable crop, so selling it provides greater value and yield.
