Sourcing
Myrrh, or Commiphora myrrha in Latin, is native to Somaliland, where its harvesting is a generational tradition.
Myrrh is native to the African and Middle Eastern regions, and has been highly valued as a precious plant since ancient times. Over time, myrrh has been used for perfumes, as incense, and for medicinal purposes.
Myrrh essential oil is steam-distilled from the resin of the low-growing myrrh tree. The tree has gnarled, crooked, thorny branches with few leaves. The resin is formed from the tree's sap, which first solidifies into a shiny, amber-colored resin, then dries and darkens over time. To release the tree's sap, harvesters make incisions in the tree, allowing the waxy sap, or gum, to flow out. The incisions are carefully managed to ensure the trees remain healthy and produce well for many years to come.
