Sourcing
Indian Spikenard grows in the subalpine and alpine regions of the Himalayas in Nepal, China, and India. doTERRA sources its Indian Spikenard essential oil from Nepal, thereby providing essential income to local harvesters and distillers.
Indian Spikenard is a flowering plant of the Valerianaceae family. It grows on the slopes of the Himalayas at an altitude of 3000 to 5000 meters. It grows to about one meter tall and produces small, pink, bell-shaped flowers. Indian Spikenard is an endangered plant species, so its harvesting quantity and frequency are restricted. doTERRA sources its Indian Spikenard essential oil while adhering to these restrictions. We understand the importance of protecting the plant and want to contribute to its long-term survival for future generations. The dark green essential oil is extracted from the rhizome of the Indian Spikenard, which is the underground stem of the plant. Roots typically also originate from the rhizome itself. The harvesting season is typically very short, lasting only 15–20 days. After the rhizomes are dug up, they are cleaned and then dried for a few days before distillation.
